Fashion And Art: The Met’s Perfect Couple

An afternoon at the Met is the epitome of classic New York. As if there wasn’t already enough incentive to visit this city staple, a new exhibit is opening in February that will attract fashion fans and art history majors alike. From February 26 through May 27, Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity will be on view, including famous works by Monet, Manet and Renoir, among others.

Fashion is art, and anyone who denies it clearly has never stood out from the crowd. Impeccable taste and an artistic sensibility are required to achieve that perfect balance inherent in any truly striking ensemble. The “effortless” look? Please. We all know what a misnomer that is. As painstakingly as an artist adds paint to a canvas, so does the fashionable woman prepare her outfit for a major event or to claim her spot in the front row a favorite designer’s show.

The Impressionist artists understood that fashion ought to be admired and appreciated, and more importantly, that it embodies the spirit of the times. Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity explores the emergence of new and vibrant fashions in 18th-century Parisian society in relation to the sudden popularity of fashion magazines and department stores. The exhibit is a true feast for the eyes and a shot of culture that will provide inspiration for your next shopping trip.

And of course, it doesn’t hurt that the museum caters to one of our guiltiest pleasures: people-watching. Better yet, don that fur jacket and diamond necklace: Be the one who’s watched! A trip to this exhibit is an excellent occasion to become both spectator and part of the spectacle—not that you ever really need an excuse to show off the latest additions to your wardrobe.
