Baltusrol.orgYesterday evening, the PGA Championship wrapped up in Springfield, New Jersey, as Oklahoma-native Jimmy Walker took home the first place title. The tournament was held at the prestigious Baltusrol Golf Club, a course that has remained as a symbol of luxury in New Jersey for decades.

Professional golfer Jack Nicklaus once stated, “I shall always count Baltusrol among my favorite courses—it is certainly one of the finest in the world.”

To play Baltusrol first-hand is an experience within itself; For those who have never teed off or could not attend the PGA Championship tournament this past weekend, take a look at what ranks Baltusrol among one of the best in the country below.

Baltusrol is home to two top-tiered, 18-hole courses: the lower and upper courses. Both courses were designed by A. W. Tillinghast, a well-noted American golf architect, who had a vision for Baltusrol involving a “Dual Courses” initiative. His extraordinary execution of the project became one of his best works, and even landed the golf club on the National Historic Landmark registry list. The courses, which were officially opened to the public in 1922, are listed among the Top 100 Courses in America by Golf Digest, Golfweek and Golf Magazine.

Some significant events include seven U.S. Opens, four U.S. Amateurs, two U.S. Women’s Opens, two U.S. Women’s Amateurs, two PGA Championships and the MGA Carter Cup, an event dedication to young professionals 18 years and younger.

The esteemed club even hosts its very own Baltusrol Invitational, which takes place in July. According to the website, “The Baltusrol Invitational is a mid-amateur invitational four-ball tournament played at Baltusrol Golf Club over two days in July. The tournament consists of rounds of better ball and foursomes on the first day, played on the Lower Course, followed by aggregate medal play on the second day, played on the Upper Course.” The next invitational will be held July 20-21, 2017, and the club will be celebrating its 41st year of the tournament.

Golf_AerialPerhaps the most stunning aspect of the golf club is the Clubhouse. Founded by Louis Keller, the original clubhouse burned down in 1909. The clubhouse that is currently standing on the property was designed by Chester H. Kirk, a notable architect who was also a member of the club.
