The Public Hotel New York
The man behind the “boutique hotel,” Ian Schrager, has opened his newest hotel on the Lower East Side in Manhattan, the Public. The idea behind Public is luxury for an affordable price, Ian Schrager even says, “The primary idea is luxury for all. I think that is an important idea. It’s revolutionary. It’s taking luxury and democratizing it and making it available to everybody.” With rooms averaging $200 per night, Public is substantially cutting prices as compared to traditional, luxury, 5-star hotels.
Though the rooms, lobby, restaurants, and nightclub reflect modern luxury – the draw that Schrager has made is cutting the traditional luxury services such as bellboys and room service. Schrager designed the hotel to be an alternative to Airbnb instead of a hotel getaway.
The Public Kitchen is Public’s gourmet restaurant run by world renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. But this is not the only dining option at the Public – the Louis is part grocery store, part cafe, and part market that guests can order food from or grab and go. The Diego is Public’s private bar, and there is another Roof Bar that appears to be floating above the city skyline with floor to ceiling windows. Unique to Public is its nightclub, Public Arts, that will showcase well known performers, art exhibitions, and film screenings.
The rooms at Public are categorized as Queen, King, Loft, and Suites, and each room offers touch-controlled black out shades, Bose wireless bluetooth speakers, a 50” flat screen with access to Apple TV, wireless internet access, and more. Though the rooms lack much of the frill that has become common among luxury hotels, the rooms are comfortable and simple yet sophisticated with modern flare. With beautiful views of the city and even Central Park, the Public hotel is perfectly located.
