On November 5, 2014, the America’s Cup Event Council announced that the America’s Cup World Series—the earliest stage of the oldest international sporting event, the America’s Cup—will take place in Bermuda next October 16 to 18.

The America’s Cup World Series features the top sailors around the globe competing for a chance to gain points, which will be added to their overall score in the America’s Cup Qualifiers scheduled to happen in 2017.

“The waters of Bermuda are ideal for racing, as anyone who has sailed here can attest,” says the Premier of Bermuda, the Honorable Michael Dunkley. “We’re very excited to have our island be a part of the next America’s Cup and to have an opportunity to showcase our maritime heritage and first class hospitality to America’s Cup teams.”

During the America’s Cup World Series, teams of sailors race AC45 catamarans. These vessels are expertly designed to increase speed while competing. Because the catamarans function by using sails, locations where the America’s Cup events are held require adequate wind speeds. The higher the wind speeds, the faster the catamarans glide; sometimes the vessels even glide above water level.

“When we started to look at Bermuda as a potential venue for 2017, it quickly became apparent that it would be an ideal location for an America’s Cup World Series event, regardless of the final venue decision,” says Harvey Schiller, who is the Commercial Commissioner of the 35th America’s Cup.

The America’s Cup is held when a sailing team, which meets the qualifications specified in the Deed of Gift, challenges the current holders of the America’s Cup for a rematch. Currently, the holder of the oldest sporting trophy is the San Francisco’s Golden Gate Yacht Club. The yacht club to hold the most America’s Cup wins is the New York Yacht Club with 25.

While there is no exact date specified for the actual America’s Cup event, a date and location is expected to be released by December of this year. The location of the America’s Cup event is narrowed down between San Diego and Bermuda.
