No matter where your travels take you, locals have strong opinions about what ingredients and methods constitutes the “best” pizza dish. In Yonkers, New York, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, more commonly known to locals as Pepe’s, is proud to deliver what was voted the best pizza in the United States.
One of the oldest pizzerias in the nation, there’s no doubt that Frank Pepe’s Italian tradition helped skyrocket his pie to the top. After Pepe immigrated in 1925, he established the business by baking bread and selling it to locals. He lived above the pizzeria with his family, making it a true family-owned business. To date, the beloved pizzeria is still a family-operated business to ensure true Italian traditions are upheld, resulting in incredible dishes each time.
Altogether, the pizzeria has nine locations: New Haven, Fairfield, Manchester, Danbury, West Hartford, Uncasville, Chestnut Hill, Waterbury, and Yonkers, which was the first New York location.
The Yonkers location is impressive, giving off an old-school Italian vibe and a dining area that can accommodate up to 50 individuals. To celebrate the city and its incredible culture, Pepe’s serves Yonkers Ale, a local-made IPA, to give guests the full Yonkers experience when dining.
Besides perfectly made plain pies, the pizzeria also makes other signature dishes such as the White Clam Pizza, which came from the original menu of serving little neck clams on the half shell as a common appetizer.
Pepe’s believes that what sets their pizza apart from others is the use of a coal fire in a brick oven. Even though the cooking time for the pizza may take a few minutes longer than an ordinary joint, Pepe’s says it’s worth the extra wait to taste a “perfect Pepe pizza.”
Not only is Pepe’s proclaimed as having one of the best pizza places around, but TravelerToday.com featured the restaurant in an article featuring the five best pizza restaurants outside of Italy. Other publications such as The Daily Meal and USA Today have also listed Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana as a must-try.
