dubrovnik1-ivo-pervan-Opera, ballet, music and drama come together at the Dubrovnik Festival in Croatia every year to celebrate the spirit of the arts. The historic city of Dubrovnik, Croatia hosts this annual festival and this year it is being held now until August 25th. Sitting at the edge of the Adriatic Sea, this already beautiful city is filled with tourists, locals, and celebrities during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

Dubrovnik was known throughout history for being a maritime center of trade and it was home to many Croatian playwrights, poets, authors, and artists. It is for this reason that the Dubrovnik Festival exists, it serves as a reminder and revival of the Renaissance and Baroque arts that coexisted in Croatia.

The program for the festival features piano and violin performances, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Ballet, symphony orchestras, Shakespeare’s plays, operatic performances, and much more. In addition to these acclaimed works, they are performed in historic spaces. Rector’s Palace and Sponza Palace are popular venues this year, these historic spots also made an appearance on the hit TV show Game of Thrones.dubrovnik-stradun

As one enjoys the festival they can stroll down the Stradun, the marble street that runs through the Old Town of Dubrovnik. Sightseers can also explore the walls surrounding the city, or visit the beautiful beaches just minutes away. There is no limit to lavish hotels in the area either, from the luxurious Villa Orsula to the modern Hotel Dubrovnik Palace to the boutique Pucic Palace.

Lovers of history, art, theatre, music, and travel must make Dubrovnik top of their “to-do” list. Even after the Summer Festival, Dubrovnik hosts the Ston Wall Marathon, the Good Food Festival, Advent in the City, and then to finish the year the city also has New Year’s Eve Festivities. Dubrovnik is a must see, and there is always something going on around the city whether it be a festival or a concert or an art show.
