Luxury knows no limits; and it seems like the famed single malt whisky brand, The Macallan, keeps elevating the bar higher and higher. The latest launch, The Macallan 72 Year Old in Lalique — The Genesis Decanter, is the spirit’s rarest bottling to date and it certainly does not disappoint. With luxe packaging, exquisite notes and a limited number of bottles available, whisky connoisseurs will want to get their hands on one.
The cask marks a new era for The Macallan — one that, according to the brand, celebrates “the collaboration of masters from across the fields of whisky, crystal, architecture, construction and craftsmanship.” This release honors the brand’s newest distillery and visitor experience, which will open up to the public on June 2. To commemorate this milestone, The Macallan worked hard to ensure that the presentation of the Genesis Decanter is truly remarkable.
The bespoke crystal bottle, which was fashioned by Lalique, showcases natural-looking curves. The decanter then sits inside a wooden presentation case that was inspired by The Macallan distillery. The case was handmade by Burgess Studio and features a “curved wood” interior, so the bottle rests delicately inside when closed. While the presentation of the Genesis Decanter is ultra-luxurious, what’s even more desirable is the liquid gold that lies inside.
Aged for 72 years, the whisky features nose notes of aged oak smoke, citrus lemons, green apples, vanilla, raisins and a hint of ginger, while palate notes include vanilla, sweet oak smoke, wood spice, delicate peat smoke, citrus fruits and green apples. After you take your initial sip, the finishing notes leave you with a fruity/oaky taste that lingers wonderfully on the tongue.
“For its 72 years of maturation, the deceptively light color hints that this is not an ordinary single malt,” says Nick Savage, Macallan’s Master Distiller. “Reminiscent of a time gone by, it carries an exquisite balance of strong, sweet oak with the peaty spirit shaping its refined character. The whisky delivers surprise after surprise as aromas of fruit follow distinctive hints of peat, all the way through to the back of the mouth where it is finished off with a lingering hint of rich fruit and oak. Although delicate throughout all aspects, it provides an intense experience which acknowledges the distinguished history of The Macallan.”
The Macallan 72 Year Old in Lalique — The Genesis Decanter was poured into 600 limited edition decanters that are individually numbered to mark its extreme rarity. Each decanter will allegedly sell for nearly $60,000, a number that attests to its unique value. The Macallan will release these decanters later this summer at certain locations including the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa, as well as in certain airport stores and the Macallan Distillery and Visitor Experience.
